Yi Yi Fu Zi Bai Jiang San is a 3-ingredient Chinese Medicine formula with Job's Tears (Yi Yi Ren) as a principal ingredient.
Invented in 220 AD, it belongs to the category of formulas that clear internal abscesses and sores. Its main actions are: 1) expels pus and reduces abscesses and 2) warms the Yang.
In Chinese Medicine health conditions are thought to arise due to "disharmonies" in the body as a system. These disharmonies are called "patterns" and the very purpose of herbal formulas is to fight them in order to restore the body's harmony.
From a Western Medicine standpoint, such patterns can give rise to a range of conditions such as acute appendicitis, chronic appendicitis or pelvic inflammatory disease for instance.
On this page, after a detailed description of each of the three ingredients in Yi Yi Fu Zi Bai Jiang San, we review the patterns and conditions that Yi Yi Fu Zi Bai Jiang San helps treat.
Yi Yi Ren is a king ingredient in Yi Yi Fu Zi Bai Jiang San. Like the name indicates, it means it has more power than other ingredients in the formula.
Part used: Dried ripe kernel
Nature: Cool
Taste(s): Sweet
Meridian affinity: LungSpleenStomach
Category: Herbs that drain Dampness
Yi Yi Ren is bland, sweet, and slightly cold. Its nature of Heat-Clearing, Dampness-resolving, and pus-expelling make it one of the most frequently used herbs for the treatment of Lung and Intestinal abscesses in TCM.
Bai Jiang Cao is a deputy ingredient in Yi Yi Fu Zi Bai Jiang San. This means it helps the king ingredient(s) treat the main pattern or it serves to treat a coexisting pattern.
Bai Jiang Cao acrid and slightly cold and is able to reduce Blood Stagnation and abscesses from the bowels and Lower Burner. It focuses the action of the key ingredient on the Intestines, the resolution of abscesses, and the draining of pus.
Zhi Fu Zi is an assistant ingredient in Yi Yi Fu Zi Bai Jiang San. This means that it either serves to reinforces the effect of other ingredients or it moderates their toxicity.
Zhi Fu Zi stimulates the Yang. It assists Job's tears in dispersing Damp-Cold and prevents the cooling nature of Patrinia from causing further harm to the body's Yang Qi, even as it accentuates its ability to disperse abscesses, open areas of constraint, and invigorate Qi and Blood in the Intestines.
